I first start gathering a lot of different magazines with diversified contents.
Then I make a first selection by tearing out the pages that contain the images I want.
Then begins the strictly-speaking cutout session. I meticulously extract (often using a Stanley knife) the image or part of image that touched me.
When I’m done I file the images by theme or colour in transparent file sleeves, that I next file in alphabetical order in ring binders. The images are now ready for a new life!
I created like this a huge database of images, ready to use and easy to reach!
Because when begins the creation session it’s really enjoyable to find in a flash the image you want, the particular one that I know I own and want to use…
Besides, it’s often during the long cutout session that I let my imagination go wild.
All this work of preparation seems to be long and tedious (it really is) but if I reconsider it, I can say this work is essential.
The creation session begins once I have found the idea or the theme. I select the images that could tally with my way of thinking about the theme.
And then I do the arrangement. Even if the linking between two images is sometimes obvious, filling a whole page demands a huge work and reflection.
